On September 17, 2024, the EMC Foundation held an impactful drone and camera trap training session at the Bimichi Eco-Lodge in St. Cuthbert’s Mission (Pakuri). The training combined theoretical knowledge with practical applications, demonstrating how technology can be effectively used for environmental conservation. Eight enthusiastic residents, including adults and youths from St. Cuthbert’s Mission, participated in this engaging session.
The session introduced participants to the fundamentals of drone technology, covering what drones are, their purpose in environmental conservation, and the types used for wildlife monitoring. Participants learned about the key components of drones, proper maintenance for longevity, and essential regulations such as safety protocols, no-fly zones, and local and national guidelines. They practised key flight manoeuvres, including safe ascent, descent, hovering, and navigating around the village to capture clear aerial footage. Similarly, participants were trained in the use of camera traps, learning how these devices work and their role in wildlife monitoring. They engaged in hands-on exercises, setting up and placing camera traps in optimal locations to collect wildlife data, and received instructions on proper maintenance to ensure long-term functionality in the field.
Mr. Deopaul Somwaru, an EMC Foundation Coordinator, led the session, providing invaluable insights and guidance. His expertise ensured that participants left with practical knowledge they could immediately put to use in their village, contributing to conservation efforts in the region. The successful deployment of the camera traps is expected to yield fascinating insights into the wildlife present in and around St. Cuthbert’s Mission, further strengthening community-led conservation initiatives.
By the end of the training, the participants had gained both theoretical knowledge and practical skills in using drones and camera traps, equipping them to actively contribute to conservation efforts in their community. This training marks another step in the EMC Foundation’s commitment to fostering environmental stewardship through education and empowerment.
